In 2006, PEC partnered with the Joslin Diabetes Center and Upstate Medical University to develop and deploy a Student Telemedicine Unit (STU) to area public schools purposed to assist children and public school nurses with managing Diabetes Mellitus 1 (DM1). The purpose of this pilot project was to use our collaborative environment in conjunction with medical technologies to help students and school nurses to manage student diabetes care while allowing them to stay in school. With the STU, students were able to avoid missing classes because they were able to have doctor’s appointments online. In a virtual environment to discuss their diabetes care.
PEC provided the STU hardware and software and in addition, trained each school nurse and Joslin nurse who participated in the program how to use the STUs. Furthermore, PEC provided on-site support as needed. The pilot project successfully improved children’s diabetes care and is still currently in use today.
